Isle of South Uist Self Catering Cottage

Getting here is part of the adventure...

Guests can travel to South Uist and Stilligarry Cottage by ferry, through one of four ports, or by air.
Once on the island, if using a SatNav system, the postcode for the cottage is HS8 5RS.

Below are directions from each ferry port and the local airport:
 
 
Directions from Lochmaddy pier to Stilligarry Cottage:

  1. Drive off the Uig – Lochmaddy ferry and turn left at the first junction straight off the boat.
  2. Follow the road for just over 7 miles. The road is mostly two way, do not make any turns until you reach the next junction at the local shop, Clachan Stores. There, turn left onto A865.
  3. Continue along the road - you will cross several causeways as you make your way across North Uist, Grimsay, Benbecula and finally, onto South Uist.
  4. After almost 20 miles, you will be midway through South Uist. You should look for a sign on the left hand side of the road marked ‘Stadhlaigearraidh – Stilligarry’. Turn right here and enter the village of Stilligarry.
  5. The cottage is the third house on the left side of the road. It has a black roof, light coloured walls and a painted wooden fence along the front.

 
 Directions from Lochboisdale pier to Stilligarry Cottage:

  1. On disembarking from the ferry, continue onwards to the main road (the A856).
  2. After almost three miles, you will reach a bend in the road to the right, with the option to turn off to the left. This is opposite the Borrodale Hotel. Continue to follow the road, bearing right at the turn, and continue north. 
  3. Follow the main spinal route for approximately 14 miles (still the A856). The road varies from two-way to single track at various areas, but continue following and do not make any turns. 
  4. After 14 miles, you should keep an eye out for a sign, with the word 'Stadhlaigearradih' in large letters and 'Stilligarry' in a smaller font. Turn left here, as the sign indicates. 
  5. Follow the road for a few seconds. Stilligarry Cottage is the third building on the left hand side of the road. It has a black roof, light coloured walls and a painted wooden fence along the front.

 

Directions from Berneray pier to Stilligarry Cottage:

  1. Drive off the Leverburgh – Berneray ferry and turn left at the first junction.
  2. Continue onto the causeway across to North Uist.
  3. At the next junction, after the causeway, turn right (towards B893).
  4. Continue travelling along the road for just over a mile. Then at the next junction, turn left onto B893.
  5. Continue for another 3 miles then turn left at the junction (onto A865).
  6. Travel along the road for another 4.3 miles, until the next junction, where you turn right onto A867.
  7. Travel along the two-way road for 7.3 miles until you reach the next junction at the local shop, Clachan Stores. There, turn left onto A865.
  8. Continue along the road - you will cross several causeways as you make your way across North Uist, Grimsay, Benbecula and finally, onto South Uist.

Directions from the Eriskay ferry to Stilligarry Cottage:

  1. On disembarking from the ferry, turn left and follow the road up the hill.
  2. Continue through Eriskay, you will pass the local shop on the left hand side of the road. 
  3. At the first junction after the shop, turn right.
  4. Then, immediately afterwards, turn left, following the sign for the causeway.
  5. Cross the causeway onto South Uist, then at the next junction, turn right.
  6. Follow the road for almost two miles until the next junction where you turn right.
  7. Continue to follow the road for almost 4.5 miles until you reach a junction at the Borrodale Hotel, just after the Daliburgh Co-op store.
  8. At the junction, turn left and continue north.

Directions from Benbecula Airport to Stilligarry Cottage:
 

  1. Leave the airport carpark and turn right.
  2. After about a minute you will reach a junction opposite the Bank of Scotland building. Turn right.
  3. Follow the road through the main town Balivanich and continue onwards along the left coast of Benbecula for 10-15 minutes.
  4. You will reach a junction where you should turn right again.
  5. Proceed onwards, following the road past the Co-op supermarket and over the causeway onto South Uist.
  6. Continue to drive south, following the road and taking no turns.
  7. Midway through South Uist, you should look for a sign on the left hand side of the road marked ‘Stadhlaigearraidh – Stilligarry’. Turn right here and enter the village of Stilligarry.
  8. The cottage is the third house on the left side of the road. It has a black roof, light coloured walls and a new painted wooden fence along the front.
